Fiqh al-Ṣalāt

The Jurisprudence of Prayer — its times, its signs, its form

"Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at fixed times." — al-Nisāʾ 4:103

01ʿAlāmāt al-Dukhūl

How Do You Know the Time Has Entered?

The Lawgiver tied each prayer to a visible sign in the sky. The note on each card follows the madhhab chosen above.

The Shadow Clock

Plant a stick in the ground and watch its shadow. It shrinks until noon, then grows. ʿAṣr begins when the shadow is as long as the stick plus its noon shadow (most scholars) — or twice as long plus it (Abū Ḥanīfa).

13:00

Simplified: a 12-hour day — sunrise 06:00, noon 12:00, sunset 18:00 — as on an equinox day in Makkah. Real days are longer or shorter through the year.

Dawn & Twilight

Fajr is the true dawn (al-fajr al-ṣādiq): light spreading along the horizon — not the thin vertical “tail of the wolf” that comes before it. After sunset the red glow fades first, then the white. ʿIshāʾ enters when the red is gone (most scholars) or the white (Abū Ḥanīfa).

How Each School Divides the Dayكيف يقسّم كل مذهب اليوم

Each bar is a prayer's window, divided by the school into virtuous, chosen, permissible, disliked and necessity-only time. Drag across the chart or press play — or switch to All four to line the schools up for one prayer.

The bars show how each school orders and divides the prayer windows through one day — not clock times, which move through the year and differ by place. For real times, see the yearly chart below.

The Five Prayers Across 365 Days

Choose a country. Each line is one prayer's start time on every day of this year, calculated from the sun's position for the city shown. Steps in the lines are daylight-saving changes; ʿAṣr follows the madhhab chosen above.

Calculated with standard astronomical formulas (solar declination and the equation of time) for the city listed, using its common local method. Your masjid's timetable may differ by a few minutes; at high latitudes Fajr and ʿIshāʾ use the angle-based approximation.

Rulings Related to Timeأحكام متعلقة بالوقت

Times in which prayer is prohibited
TimeالوقتRulingالحكم
After the Fajr prayer until sunriseبعد صلاة الفجر حتى طلوع الشمسNo voluntary prayer; missed obligatory prayers may be made up.
From sunrise until the sun rises a spear's length (~15 min)من طلوع الشمس حتى ترتفع قيد رمح (نحو ربع ساعة)Strongly prohibited. Ḥanafīs: no prayer at all is valid, not even a missed obligatory one.
When the sun is at its zenith (istiwāʾ) until zawālعند استواء الشمس حتى تزولProhibited (Ḥanafī, Shāfiʿī, Ḥanbalī). Mālikīs: not disliked in the relied-upon view. Shāfiʿīs exempt Friday.
After the ʿAṣr prayer until sunsetبعد صلاة العصر حتى الغروبNo voluntary prayer; obligatory make-ups allowed.
When the sun yellows until it setsعند اصفرار الشمس حتى تغربStrongly prohibited. Ḥanafīs allow only that same day's ʿAṣr (with dislike).

Shāfiʿī: prayers with a preceding cause (e.g. taḥiyyat al-masjid, prayer after wuḍūʾ, funeral) are allowed in these times, and so is any prayer within the Ḥaram of Makkah.

Catching the prayer within its time (idrāk)

If someone begins a prayer near the end of its time, when is it counted as performed on time (adāʾ)?

  • Ḥanafī & Ḥanbalī:الحنفية والحنابلة: by reaching the opening takbīr within the time.
  • Mālikī & Shāfiʿī:المالكية والشافعية: by completing one full rakʿah (with its two prostrations) within the time — per the ḥadīth “whoever catches a rakʿah of the prayer has caught the prayer.”

Deliberately delaying a prayer until too little time remains to complete it is sinful by consensus.

Combining prayers (al-jamʿ)

Dhuhr may be combined with ʿAṣr, and Maghrib with ʿIshāʾ — in the time of the first (taqdīm) or the second (taʾkhīr).

Only at ʿArafah (taqdīm) and Muzdalifah (taʾkhīr) during Ḥajj. Otherwise only “formal” combining: Dhuhr at the end of its time, ʿAṣr at the start of its time.
Travel, rain/mud at night (Maghrib & ʿIshāʾ in the mosque), illness, ʿArafah & Muzdalifah.
Long travel (either taqdīm or taʾkhīr); rain for congregational prayer (taqdīm only).
Widest: travel, illness, rain, mud, strong cold wind, breast-feeding women, and those with a genuine need.
Making up missed prayers (qaḍāʾ)
  • A missed obligatory prayer must be made up — immediately if missed without excuse. “Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers it.”
  • Order (tartīb):الترتيب: obligatory between the current prayer and a small number of missed ones for Ḥanafīs (under six), Mālikīs (up to five) and Ḥanbalīs; it drops if forgotten or if time is short. Shāfiʿīs: recommended only.
  • A missed prayer is made up as it was: a traveller's shortened prayer missed on a journey is made up as two rakʿahs (Ḥanafī, Mālikī).
Adhān, certainty & special cases
  • A prayer performed before its time is invalid even if done in good faith; one must have certainty or strong presumption (ghalabat al-ẓann) that the time has entered.
  • Adhān before time is invalid — except for Fajr: Mālikīs, Shāfiʿīs and Ḥanbalīs allow it after midnight (with a second adhān at dawn recommended); Ḥanafīs do not (except Abū Yūsuf).
  • Jumuʿah takes Dhuhr's time. Ḥanbalīs additionally permit it before zawāl (from the time of the ʿĪd prayer).
  • Cooling Dhuhr (al-ibrād) in intense heat is recommended; in winter it is prayed early.
  • In high latitudes where twilight never disappears, the time is estimated (taqdīr) — by the nearest normal location or by proportions of the night.
